0991 explores the daily struggles faced by people with disabilities, illustrating how seemingly mundane tasks can become monumental challenges. The piece focuses on the act of using an ATM—a task many take for granted—highlighting the often invisible barriers that people with disabilities encounter. In '0991,' the protagonist’s actions are replayed in reverse, symbolizing that not all disabilities are immediately apparent. This reverse loop emphasizes the repetitive, sometimes invisible nature of these struggles.
The ATM code '1990' serves as a poignant reference to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, a landmark federal law designed to protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination. By repeatedly attempting to enter this code, the artist reflects on the ongoing challenges and systemic obstacles that still persist despite legal protections. '0991' loops indefinitely, underscoring the persistent and often overlooked difficulties individuals face navigating a world not always designed with accessibility in mind. Through this work, I aim to provoke empathy and awareness about the real, often invisible, barriers faced by people with disabilities.
